Plot Summary:
In an imaginary world where alchemy rules the laws of nature, Edward and his brother Alphonse are unique. In a failed attempt to bring their mother back from the dead, they lost all (in Alphonse's case) or part (Edward's) of their physical bodies, which were replaced with metal. To regain their loss, they are searching for the Philosopher's Stone. To facilitate their search, they work for the State Military of Amestris as agents. In this, the fourth volume of the anime series, Ed and Al must find a home for a lost kitten, duel a fellow agent and mentor, find a missing alchemist who deserted the military years ago, and discover who is killing off fellow members of the military.
Critical Evaluation:
This is excellent anime! The artwork and animation are first rate, and the soundtrack is gorgeous and compelling. The humor is both slapstick and subtle, and the characters act and interact like real people; the dark humor, practical jokes, and camaraderie found in any military group is conveyed well. Characters have quirks and do unexpected things. This universe is complicated, and younger viewers may not get all of the subtleties, but there is enough action and drama and humor to hook anyone.
Reader's Annotation:
Edward and Alphonse must find a deserter and dodge a killer on their search for the Philosopher's Stone.
